Glass House Mountains Destination Guide
The Glass House Mountains are one of Queensland’s most distinctive landscapes, rising dramatically from the Sunshine Coast hinterland about an hour north of Brisbane. The ancient volcanic peaks form a spectacular skyline surrounded by forests, farmland and rural landscapes.
For visitors and photographers, the region combines dramatic scenery, outdoor experiences, Aboriginal cultural heritage and some of the most recognisable mountain landscapes in South East Queensland.
The Iconic Glass House Mountains
The Glass House Mountains are a group of ancient volcanic formations created millions of years ago. Their distinctive shapes are the result of hardened volcanic rock remaining after surrounding material was gradually eroded.
The best-known peaks include:
-
Mount Beerwah — the highest peak in the group and a dominant feature of the landscape.
-
Mount Coonowrin (Crookneck) — recognised for its distinctive narrow, dramatic profile.
-
Mount Tibrogargan — one of the most recognisable and photographed peaks.
-
Mount Ngungun — a popular walking destination offering panoramic views.
-
Mount Tibberoowuccum — a smaller but distinctive volcanic peak.
-
Mount Tunbubudla (The Twins) — a striking pair of volcanic peaks.
The mountains also hold deep cultural significance for the Traditional Custodians of the region, including the Jinibara and Kabi Kabi peoples. Visitors should respect cultural values and any access restrictions applying to individual peaks.

Exploring the wider Sunshine Coast hinterland
Mount Ngungun is particularly popular for walking and panoramic views, while viewpoints across the region provide spectacular perspectives towards the volcanic peaks and surrounding countryside.
The Glass House Mountains also make an excellent base for exploring nearby Maleny, Montville, Australia Zoo and the wider Sunshine Coast hinterland.
The Glass House Mountains from Above
An aerial perspective reveals the Glass House Mountains in a completely different way. Rather than viewing each peak individually, aerial photography shows the relationship between the volcanic formations, surrounding forests, farmland and valleys.
Early morning can produce mist between the mountains, while changing weather and afternoon or sunset light can dramatically alter the appearance of the landscape.
This combination of rugged volcanic peaks and the surrounding green hinterland makes the Glass House Mountains particularly suited to aerial landscape photography.
