Storms, Sunrises, Sunsets & Fog of South East Queensland

South East Queensland is a particularly dynamic region for atmospheric and weather photography. Its combination of Pacific Ocean coastline, subtropical climate, mountain ranges, inland valleys and waterways produces constantly changing skies and light.

From Brisbane and the Moreton Bay coastline to the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast Hinterland, Scenic Rim and Tweed Valley, dramatic weather can transform familiar landscapes into completely different photographic scenes.

Thunderstorms

Summer thunderstorms are one of South East Queensland's most dramatic natural phenomena. Warm, humid air, coastal sea breezes and rising air over the Great Dividing Range can contribute to rapidly developing storms.

For photography, approaching storm clouds, shafts of sunlight, dramatic cloud formations and post-storm clearing can produce exceptional images.

Important: dramatic storm conditions should be photographed from a safe location. Drones should never be flown in thunderstorms, heavy rain or conditions beyond the aircraft manufacturer's operating limits.

Sunrises

South East Queensland's coastline, rivers, lakes and mountain ranges provide diverse sunrise opportunities.

Early morning can produce soft golden light, pastel skies, calm water, reflections and mist, particularly around inland valleys and waterways.

Coastal locations such as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay can provide expansive eastern horizons, while inland locations offer sunrise light across mountains, forests and valleys.

Sunsets

Sunset photography is particularly rewarding across the Scenic Rim, Gold Coast Hinterland and inland South East Queensland, where mountains and valleys can catch warm late-afternoon light.

Cloud formations can dramatically intensify colour, while post-storm conditions may produce striking combinations of sunlight, dark clouds and atmospheric haze.

Fog & Mist

During cooler conditions, fog can develop in inland valleys, around waterways and across elevated hinterland areas.

Springbrook, the Scenic Rim, Brisbane's surrounding valleys and other hinterland locations can produce atmospheric fog and mist, sometimes creating cloud layers that partially obscure mountains, forests and city skylines.

From above, fog can add depth and separation to the landscape, revealing ridges, peaks and treetops emerging through the cloud.

The Landscape from Above

Weather and light are particularly powerful subjects for aerial photography because they continually change the appearance of the landscape.

From above, cloud shadows, mist-filled valleys, reflective waterways, coastal light, mountain ridges and storm systems can transform otherwise familiar locations.

The most compelling images often occur during short windows when weather, light and landscape come together.
